Cracks in houses linked to nearby construction

        Fecha:Dec 26,2012

Large cracks on walls and ceilings, sloping driveways, broken tiles and leaky roofs. These are some of the issues that have been plaguing the landed homes of residents along Jalan Legundi, Jalan Derum and Sembong Road - off Sembawang Road - since April.

The damage has been linked to the construction of a three-storey mixed development at a neighbouring plot of land, at the junction of Jalan Legundi and Jalan Tampang.

So far, among the 35 houses in the area, 17 have experienced some form of damage, although the buildings are structurally safe.

On Monday, Foreign and Law Minister K Shanmugam, who is a Nee Soon Group Representation Constituency Member of Parliament, visited the affected houses.

He was accompanied by officers from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), members of the neighbourhood committee and grassroots leaders.

Without naming the developer, Mr Shanmugam wrote on Facebook that he has asked the BCA to arrange for the developer of the neighbouring plot to repair the more serious damage in some of the houses before the Chinese New Year.

"This, of course, depends on whether the developer accepts responsibility. If it doesn't, then we will have to look at legal solutions," Mr Shanmugam said. He added that he has also asked for a dialogue with the BCA, neighbourhood committee members and the developer in two weeks to address concerns faced by the residents.
