Construction delay: Metro Blood Bank cost may go up by 300%

        Fecha:Oct 29,2012

The delay in the construction of the Rs 340-crore Metro Blood Bank, approved by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) a year and a half ago, may raise the cost of the project by as much as 300 per cent, sources told Newsline. The project is going through a revised budget phase owing to the delay.

“Due to the delay in commencement of the project, there has been a slight cost escalation. We have floated fresh tenders and this is currently being reviewed by the finance ministry. As soon as the necessary approvals are received, the work on all proposed metro blood banks will begin, including those in Delhi and Kolkata,” said Dr Sandhya Kabra , Assistant Director General of the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO). The Centre had proposed the metro blood bank in Mumbai in 2009, which was envisaged to be built into a Centre of Excellence for Transfusion Medicine (COE) on Sion Hospital premises.

The COE will be a state-of-the-art centre with a capacity to store up to one lakh units of blood. Among other facilities, the centre will also have a nucleic acid testing facility, biotechnology lab, cord banking and stem cell facilities. A PhD programme and an MD course for transfusion medicine are also among the plans for the COE.
